EMD export G8B/G18B: VR T class
In collaboration with Seymour Railway Heritage Centre
1st series T342 entered service with the Victorian Railways in 1956, retiring from government service in 1989, before moving into private hands. Rated to 950 HP and powered by an EMD 8-567C prime mover with D15 generator. The C signified a new crank case design (from the A and B version) by EMD, for 567 engines built from 1953.
2nd series T378 was introduced in 1964, providing 26 years of service before withdrawal and subsequent transfer into private ownership. While this G8B was originally fitted with an 8-567CR, a more powerful 8-645E prime mover was fitted by the Victorian Railways in the early 1980s. The G18B 8-645E prime mover has a higher idle and maximum speed than seen on the 8-567CR prime mover, and thus presents a louder soundscape.
