V/Line A class by Precision Scale Models

Items used

ESU 58629 LokPilot 5 DCC 21-MTC decoder

21-MTC mounting board

DCCSound warm-white LED pack (LRG - 6 per model)

DCCSound red/white bi-colour LED pack (4 per model)

Micro 2 pin connector plug/socket (2 per model)

ESU fine black wire

Disassembly and preparation

First, the body is removed from the chassis by removing 4 screws from under the floor, above the bogies.

The factory lighting board and wiring is removed, along with the cab interiors and light globes. Wires running from the bogie pivots are removed.

New wiring is applied to the bogie pickups and wired into a micro 2 pin connector socket.

A second 2 pin connector (plug side) is wired to the motor terminals. This is the entirety of the work to be done on the chassis.

5 LEDs are then fixed to the 3D printed LED holder, which itself is a push fit onto the back of the headlight casting (inside of nose).

LED array (1 per end)

LRG warm white LED fitted to top headlight position (x1)

LRG warm white LEDs fitted to the lower number board position (x2)

Red/white bi-colour LEDs fitted to the marker light position (x2)

Each bi-colour LED has a common positive, with decoder function outputs connected to the two function negative wires, one for red, the other for white.

All +ve wires are attached to the +ve output (blue) from the decoder

F0f - # 1 end headlight

F0r - # 2 end headlight

Aux 1 (green) - # 1 end number boards

Aux 2 (purple) - # 2 end number boards

Aux 3 - not used

Aux 4 - not used

Aux 5 - # 1 end white markers

Aux 6 - # 1 end red markers

Aux 7 - # 2 end white markers

Aux 8 - # 2 end red markers

Each LED is protected with a 470 - 1 kOhm resistor in its negative leg

Aux 5 - 8 are wired directly to the decoder as these are powered outputs. If wiring to the 21-MTC mount board, Aux 5-8 are logic-level outputs only.

The completed wiring loom is then fitted along the sides of the body and decoder mount board mounted in the roof at one end using double sided tape. This leaves room for a speaker and LokSound decoder in the future, if desired.

Once the loom is completed, each LED array is fitted behind the nose of the model.

Cab interiors are refitted, then the two, 2 pin connectors to the chassis (motor and power pickups) are then connected.

The installation is finished by lowering the body onto the chassis and fixing in place using the four screws under the chassis floor.
